SCOOT Conventional Adaptive Control
SCOOT, short for "Split-Cycle-Offset Optimization Technique", is an adaptive control system that implements real-time coordinated control for traffic signal networks and also a scheme-generating control system. It can collect vehicle arrival information via vehicle detectors installed upstream of each approach lane at every intersection, process the information online to formulate a control scheme, and continuously adjust the three control parameters (split, cycle length, and offset) in real time to adapt to changing traffic conditions.
The operational overview of SCOOT is shown in the figure below:

When radar-vision-geomagnetism integrated detectors are used as the detection equipment for the SCOOT system, virtual coils can be set up to output real-time traffic flow and occupancy time. This data enables the SCOOT system to generate vehicle arrival cycle flow diagrams, and through the traffic flow dispersion model, predict the cycle flow arriving at the stop line. Additionally, the radar-vision-geomagnetism integrated detectors can output lane-level information such as queue length and speed, which can be used for correcting queue predictions in the SCOOT system, making the simulation model more accurate.
Layout Method:
(1) One MPD093 radar-vision-geomagnetism integrated detector shall be installed on each signal lamp pole at the four directions of the intersection, and each detector shall face the direction of incoming vehicles.
(2) In accordance with SCOOT's layout principles, a row of geomagnetic detectors shall be installed 80-150 meters behind the stop line, serving as queue tail detectors for SCOOT. This ensures that the free travel time from the detectors to the stop line is not less than 8 seconds.
(3) The installation position of the repeater must ensure that the queue tail detectors/radar-vision-geomagnetism integrated detectors supported by the repeater are within its field of view and coverage range. The maximum distance between the repeater and the radar-vision-geomagnetism integrated detector is 310 meters. Therefore, the repeater can be installed at any position as long as it can provide good signal coverage to the radar-vision-geomagnetism integrated detectors/queue tail detectors.
During peak traffic congestion periods, when the queue tail data detected by radar fails to meet the requirements of the SCOOT system (resulting in invalid detection data), the geomagnetic detectors installed at the queue tail can output the 250ms occupancy time data required by the SCOOT system.
